How does it work?

What is FUE Hair Restoration?

FUE is a hair transplant technique in which a small round punch is used to extract units of hair follicles from an area of dense hair growth to an area of baldness. Each of these units contains one to four hairs.
Though the abbreviation ‘FUE’ is commonly known to stand for Follicular Unit Extraction, the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) recently determined that the procedure would be renamed ‘Follicular Unit Excision’.

How is it different?

With strip surgery – the old fashioned way of transplanting hair, also known as Follicular Unit Transplantation or FUT- a strip of donor tissue is removed from the back of the head (where hair loss is not present) and trimmed under magnification into individual follicular unit grafts.
FUT surgery is usually more suitable for larger areas of baldness as up to 3,000 grafts can be transplanted at one time, as long as there is an adequate supply from the patient. However, FUT requires longer healing time post-surgery and a large scar will remain across the scalp which can be hidden by longer hair.
The specialized tool used in FUE allows the surgeon to remove hair from the skin without causing damage (no strip is cut). FUE hair transplantation is minimally-evasive and therefore the scalp heals faster. A patient will often show no visible signs ten days after surgery.

How is FUE hair transplantation done?

Following are the steps for the FUE hair restoration procedure:
  • Your surgeon will shave the hair from the donor area (the scalp section from where the follicles will be removed) and from the transplant area.
  • Using a small round punch, they will extract follicles from your scalp.
  • Next, using a needle or another small, sharp surgical tool, your surgeon will make a set of minute incisions on the scalp portion where the extracted follicles will be inserted.
  • The follicles will then be surgically inserted into the incisions, and the transplant area will be cleaned and bandaged for recovery.

How does a FUE hair transplant work?

With age, the 3 phase cycle of hair growth and regrowth will shorten till the hair follicles are no longer able to regrow hairs. However, not all people start losing hair at the same time. Some people start balding in their 30s, and some, much later or earlier.
FUE hair transplants can help hair regrowth by putting new hair follicles with the capacity to grow hair in place of the old follicles. After the transplant, the new hair follicles will be nourished by blood vessels and begin growing hair in the area which previously was previously balding or had thin hair.

Dr. Burka and his staff did an amazing job of explaining all of the options for hair restoration and the pros/cons of each. They listened to my questions and needs and helped design a specific treatment plan without prescribing or forcing any specific procedure. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience from start to finish. Initially, I consulted with 7 different hair transplant clinics in the NoVa/DMV area and felt that Dr. Burka was the most understanding and least salesy. During our initial free in-person consultation, he really took the time to listen to my unique situation and carefully explain all my options to achieve my goals (In comparison, most others offered virtual or rushed in-person consultations with cookie-cutter recommendations of ~2000 graft FUE and no supplementary treatments). Further, Dr. Burka’s holistic approach – including medication and specialized Alma TED treatments prior to the surgery – have really improved the efficacy of my hair transplant. Even if you live farther away from his clinic (I live ~45mins away) you won’t regret the extra travel time.Now about the hair transplant itself: I did a 4500 graft FUT which is relatively more gnarly with the incision. Dr. Burka was very meticulous, and his team ensured I was comfortable throughout the day and felt as little pain as possible. The techs who harvested then placed the grafts clearly knew exactly what they were doing and were very friendly. They actually harvested more grafts than we anticipated, but didn’t rush anything and stayed until past 7pm to make sure everything went smoothly and all the grafts were placed correctly. Everyone involved was super professional and went above & beyond to make sure I was comfortable and that I’d get the best results possible.My followup appointments for the first hair wash & stitches removal went smoothly since Dr. Burka provided very clear instructions that I followed. I’m about 3 weeks post-surgery now and everything seems to be going according to plan. I was expecting more shedding of the newly implanted grafts at this stage, but the ALMA TED treatment I got on Dr. Burka’s recommendation seems to have minimized the shedding. I’m very grateful for his uniquely well-informed advice (no other clinic in the area provided me this insight) and look forward to seeing results gradually over the coming months.Last but not least – Dr. Burka’s team is super talented and friendly.
